He genuinely loves our great country, and he loves performing for his legion of fans.
What many of you don’t know is that Johnny enjoys collecting fine firearms and has a very impressive collection. He is very knowledgeable about the history of American firearms and their impact on American history. He understands and appreciates the role of the firearm in the development of our great country. Several pieces from his renowned collection are on display at Johnny’s “House of Cash” Museum in Hendersonville, Tennessee.
With his full cooperation and support, we have designed a handsome tribute to the American legend – The Johnny Cash Golden Tribute Texas Paterson Revolver.
Johnny Cash – The Man In Black
“Hello…I’m Johnny Cash.”
Who could read those words without imaging the famous, deep voice behind them, or that tall, striking figure, dressed in black from head to toe, and crowned with a shock of thick black hair?
Johnny Cash is more than a man – he’s an American legend, an image burned in to the hearts and minds of all Americans – young or old, from the North or South, country music fan or rock and roller, There’s just something about him that speaks to all of us in an unforgettable way.
Maybe it’s the way he can take a song about anything and make it seem like it relates to us personally – like when he takes us back to the age of the steam locomotives or the cowboys, or into the hard world of prison life – and makes it all seem absolutely real to us.
Maybe it’s the integrity he maintains in everything he does, on stage and off – an integrity that gives him such a solid foundation that he can stand, unchanged, in a world of passing fads and ever-changing values.
Maybe it’s just the sheer presence of the man – that arresting black-clad figure that draws and holds our attention with authority, then opens up his soul to us through his intensely personal music.
Colt’s Classic Texas Paterson – Johnny Cash’s Favorite Gun
You already know about Johnny Cash the performer, but you may not know that Johnny is also an avid collector of fine firearms. When we set out to issue a firearm in his honor, he requested we model it after his all-time favorite – Samuel Colt’s legendary Texas Paterson Revolver.
If Johnny Cash is the King of Country Music, Sam Colt is the King of Firearms. His innovative designs brought many advances to the art of gunmaking, and set the standard for power, performance and reliability. The Paterson was the first series of guns Colt designed, and between 1837 and 1841, approximately 2,850 were produced. Today, only a few originals survive, and the Texas Model can bring up to $500,000 at auction.
Johnny knows first-hand what a fantastic firearm this is, because he actually owned a rare and valuable original Paterson some years back. In a typically generous gesture, Johnny donated his Texas Paterson for an auction to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s new Arms and Armour wing.
24-Karat Gold Decorations Honor the King of Country
The Paterson is a .36 caliber 5-shot single action percussion revolver with an octagonal barrel and a folding trigger that extends when the hammer is cocked. If you’ve ever seen one in person, you know what a beautiful design it is, and you can imagine why Johnny hand-picked it for this special occasion.
The Johnny Cash Paterson is a working firearm based on the famous Texas or Holster Model Paterson revolver. It recreates in detail all the traits that made the original so well loved.
But more than that, it features a wealth of handsome gold decorations. Along the barrel, in 24-karat gold, are the titles of some of Johnny’s greatest songs. There’s “I Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Big River” and “Get Rhythm,” all written by Johnny, and songs Johnny made famous: “Ghost Riders in the Sky,” ” Orange Blossom Special,” “A Boy Named Sue,” and “Ira Hayes.”
Below the barrel on both the right and left side of the gun, handsome gold scrollwork and musical notes appear in 24-karat gold around the decorative initial “C” (for “Cash”). Golden guitar necks adorn the cylinders five chambers. Beneath the cylinder, more detailed scrollwork appears.
Along the backstrap is John’s signature and familiar “C” initial. Finally, a portrait of Johnny himself appears in pure gold on the recoil shield.
Completing this tribute to Johnny is a pair of grips in presentation grade bonded pearl. The grips have been sculpted for this special tribute. Most of the original Patersons were fitted with walnut grips, but the special presentation and show grade pieces generally had pearl or ivory grips, as will your revolver.
To protect and showcase the Johnny Cash Texas Paterson Revolver, a handsome, solid hardwood display case, finished in Johnny Cash’s trademark black and featuring his signature, stamped in gold on the lid is included to display each revolver. The interior of the case is lined with burgundy velvet contoured to the shape of the gun.
Also included with this presentation is a copy of Johnny’s best-selling autobiography, “Man in Black,”detailing the life and career of country music’s living legend and personally signed by Johnny Cash.
