In January 1956, Elmer Keith, an accomplished author and hunter, received a history-making package from Smith & Wesson. Keith had been pushing the Springfield, MA based company to design a more powerful handgun for the bigger hand-loaded cartridges he created. Inside the package Keith found a magnificent Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum Revolver, proof that someone had listened. This powerful firearm was one of the first .44 Magnum Revolvers produced by Smith & Wesson, and it wasn’t long before the public got their chance to wrap their hands around the big-bore beauty.
The rest, as they say, is history.
For many firearms enthusiasts, once the classic American caliber met the classic American revolver… everything changed. Now America Remembers is proud to introduce two exciting new Tributes celebrating the legacy of two classic .44 Magnum Revolvers: The Legends In Steel® Tribute Revolvers. Each stunning Tribute is one in a series issued exclusively by America Remembers that will be prized by fine firearms enthusiasts, collectors and historians alike.
Two Hand-Engraved Masterpieces From America Remembers
The first in the series is the blued Legends In Steel® Tribute “Classic” Edition, being offered by America Remembers on the classic Smith & Wesson Model 29 .44 Magnum Revolver. The Tribute features elaborate hand-engraving with handsomely detailed artwork on the frame, cylinder and barrel.
For the collector who appreciates a time-honored model updated in modernized, high-grade stainless steel, The Legends In Steel® Tribute “Modern” Edition is also available. For this second Tribute in the series, America Remembers selected the stunning Smith & Wesson Model 629 .44 Magnum Revolver (a stainless steel version of the classic Model 29).
Some of the world’s finest engravers commissioned specifically for this historic project by America Remembers hand-engrave each working revolver in remarkable detail, including a genuine, solid 24-karat gold inlaid medallion. Each Tribute revolver will be mirror-polished by experienced firearms polishers. Such intense effort and attention to detail follows a tradition that can be traced back to the finest presentation firearms in history.
A Legendary American Firearm
For fans of handguns with heft, these classic .44 Magnum Revolvers are without challengers. An instant hit with sportsmen, the revolver became a true legend when in the gritty, widely successful 1971 film, “Dirty Harry,” the Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum stole the show in the hands of Detective “Dirty” Harry Callahan. Almost overnight, the Model 29 Revolver became one of the most popular firearms in the world. And later, the company introduced a stainless steel version of the Model 29 – the Smith & Wesson Model 629.
Many classic revolvers have evolved over the decades since their introductions, but the .44 Magnum Revolver remains a favorite unlike any other.
