On the 50th Anniversary of V-J Day, America Does Remember
“Today the guns are silent. A great tragedy has ended. A great victory has been won…”
General Douglas MacArthur
Guadalcanal…Saipan…Okinawa…Iwo Jima…Midway…Leyte…
Before 1941, few American’s had ever heard these names. Within four years they were part of our language, synonymous with words like courage and triumph.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt broadcast his now famous message – “Yesterday, December 7, 1941 – a date that will live in infamy – the United States was deliberately attacked by the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.”He concluded the speech confidently predicting that “with the unbounding determination of our people we will gain the inevitable victory.”

U.S. Marines land on one of the many islands where
our heroes fought – and often died – to preserve freedom.
We Must Never Forget Those Who Served –
A Permanent Tribute To Our Grandfathers, Fathers and Brothers.
In recognition of the Golden Anniversary of “V-J Day” and in lasting special tribute to all the brave servicemen in World War II – The Armed Forces Commemorative Society has selected the legendary military sidearm, the Colt Government Model .45, for this historic tribute in a limited edition of only 250 pistols. We must never forget the sacrifices made by our family members and all other defenders of freedom. This handsomely decorated Tribute will surely become a family heirloom to be passed to future generations.
Trusted Sidearm of the U.S. Military
Next to his comrades and training, a soldier relies most on his combat equipment, and nothing was more deserving of this trust than the Government Model Colt .45, the most powerful military pistol in service during the war. Throughout the Pacific Campaign, the Colt performed with consistent efficiency under the harshest combat conditions.
Durable, powerful and easy to maintain, the Colt .45 proved perfectly suited to battle conditions. It occupies a position of respect unparalleled in the world of military firearms.
A litany of names of remote places our members of America’s Armed Forces fought – and often died – surrounds the top of the slide – Okinawa, Peleliu, Coral Sea, Corregidor, Philippines, Saipan, Suribachi, Pearl Harbor, Bouganville, Tarawa, Midway, Iwo Jima, Leyte, Burma, Guadalcanal, Tinian, Ulithi, and Solomons.
The World War II Golden Anniversary V-J Day Tribute will be an heirloom your family will treasure for generations. It will be a lasting reminder of the heroes and leaders of World War II, men like Douglas MacArthur, Chester Nimitz, Jimmy Doolittle, “Chesty” Puller, Joe Foss and all the fathers, grandfathers and uncles who sacrificed so much to preserve freedom.
Working with America’s finest craftsmen, commissioned specifically for this project by America Remembers, each Colt .45 is polished and decorated with specialized tributes to honor V-J Day. Two powerful scenes in 24-karat gold highlight the slide. You will also find Douglas MacArthur’s immortal words which he spoke after the signing of the surrender papers on September 2, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri. “Let us pray that peace be now restored to the world, and that God will preserve it always.”
The banner in the center of the slide pays tribute to the golden anniversary of V-J Day. The banner reads “50th Anniversary, V-J Day, Victory in the Pacific, 1945-1995.” A battleship and dive bomber complete the banner.

General Douglas MacArthur signed the Japanese surrender documents on September 2, 1945 aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. That day, MacArthur, in a broadcast to the American people, said: “Today the guns are silent. A great tragedy has ended. A great victory has been won…”
