America Remembers salutes the King of the Cowboys on the 100th anniversary of his birth. For this historic 100th Anniversary Tribute, America Remembers is proud to introduce the Roy Rogers Centennial Tribute Revolver. For this edition, we selected the Classic Colt® Single Action Revolver, a favorite of Roy Rogers and many of the cowboys of the silver screen.
This American cowboy film-star did things bigger and better than everyone else. He represented the highest American ideals—honesty, courage, faith and fair play. His name was Roy Rogers, and to this day, he remains one of the most popular cowboys ever to ride the range during the golden age of westerns. In his career, Roy appeared in more than 100 films. In 1943, he passed Gene Autry to become Hollywood’s top western star. He stayed at the top of that list for more than a decade. He made taming the Wild West look easy.
For many of us, Roy Rogers will always be the King of the Cowboys. He was America’s top moneymaking Western star from 1943 to 1954. His comic books sold 1.3 million copies each month. He and his wife, the late Dale Evans, and his horse, Trigger, appeared in scores of movies together. The Roy Rogers Show aired from 1942-1957, on both the radio and television. He was dedicated to his fans, enlisting the help of his wife and relatives to answer as many fan letters as possible. He sometimes received as many as 2,000 letters a week—some from women asking him to marry them!
Growing up with Roy was a special time for many of us, and his films and television shows bring back fond memories. As you know, his dynasty is built on fine films, great music, and family values, and his reign brought joy to millions of fans. He shared with us not only their entertaining adventures in the fictional West, but real-life inspirational messages that came straight from the heart.
-The backstrap features Roy with Trigger and it reads, “King of the Cowboys.”
-The image of Roy Rogers strumming his guitar recalls the singing
cowboy who we enjoyed listening to for so many years.
