A Stunning Tribute to the Soldiers in Blue
“Yes we’ll rally round the flag, boys, we’ll rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom,
We will rally from the hillside, we’ll gather from the plain,
Shouting the battle cry of freedom!
The Union forever! Hurrah, boys, hurrah!”
– The Battle Cry of Freedom
More than 150 years ago, thousands of men left their ordinary lives behind to march into history. Many had never even trained as soldiers, but every one of them was willing to die to keep America united.
With those first Confederate shots fired at Fort Sumter, this nation changed forever. The declaration of war inspired men to take up arms and protect the ideals of the United States. They came from all walks of life. Some from small farms, others from big cities. Individually, they had little in common. But together, they were the dark blue defenders of the Union.
The element of human drama that played out in the cities and countrysides of our nation during the Civil War continue to intrigue and fascinate us. It was a five year trial-by-fire that ultimately helped forge a more lasting, stable United States of America. Today, more than 150 years later, the names of its leaders, heroes and battles continue to stir our emotions and spark our imaginations.
America Remembers is proud to introduce the Union Forever Tribute Revolver, a handsomely decorated revolver honoring the courage and sacrifice of the Union soldiers who fought for freedom and unity, and the leaders who inspired them.
For this special Tribute, we selected the renowned Colt 1851 Navy Revolver. Because this was one of the most popular sidearms of its day, there was little debate when it came to selecting the perfect firearm to celebrate one of the most important moments in American history.
The Model 1851 Navy was first crafted by Samuel Colt in 1850. The pistol was so well designed that the 1851 Navy became one of the most coveted weapons on the Civil War battlefields. Colt sold them to both Union and Confederate officers and it became clear that his black powder masterpiece was born for battle. The revolver’s light weight, easy loading, and six-shot capacity made it a weapon of choice when it came to close-quarter combat.
The Union Forever Tribute is a fully-functional .36-caliber black powder revolver. Revolvers now available in this edition are detailed recreations of the classic Colt Model 1851 Navy produced by A. Uberti. Every surface of this classic firearm has been polished and lavishly embellished in 24-karat gold and nickel. Craftsmen commissioned to decorate this Revolver by America Remembers capture the Union legends and symbols that have inspired generations. The blued, 7½” octagonal barrel is beautifully complemented by hand-polished walnut grips. In addition, the craftsmen hand polish and decorate the trigger, hammer, backstrap and trigger guard in lustrous 24-karat gold, adding a touch of elegance to this museum-quality Tribute.
The barrel of each Tribute includes the names of legendary battles during the Civil War. Bold 24-karat gold inscriptions on the left side immortalize Gettysburg, Five Forks, Antietam, and Vicksburg. The right side highlights Lookout Mountain, Shiloh, Atlanta, and Franklin. While each of these battles are generally considered victories for the North, none of them came easy.
At the heart of this remarkable Union Forever Tribute is the elegantly-decorated cylinder. Artists have appointed it with striking portraits of President Abraham Lincoln, General Ulysses S. Grant, and Joshua Chamberlain. Each Union legend is rendered in gleaming nickel against a polished, 24-karat gold background of flags, rifles, artillery, uniforms, and musical instruments. As President of the U.S., Abraham Lincoln faced the ultimate challenge to repair a broken nation. The Civil War was an obstacle that may have defeated a lesser man, but as history proved, Lincoln rose to the occasion. As the rallying force behind the Union, his example inspired every man in dark blue from the officers to the soldiers in the field.
Ulysses S. Grant is recognized as one of the most celebrated military commanders of any war. Grant’s strategy and tenacity under fire kept his men in blue one step ahead of the Confederates. As Commanding General of the United States Army, Grant is considered the military leader who brought the Union to Victory. After accepting Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, Grant emerged to a jubilant crowd of Union soldiers. He silenced them with a single sentence: “The war is over — the rebels are our countrymen again.”
Completing the trio of Union heroes is Joshua Chamberlain. This college professor from Maine believed so passionately in the Union cause that he volunteered to serve. Chamberlain went on to prove that passion in battle, distinguishing himself at Gettysburg, and earning the Medal of Honor for his actions.
The Tribute is a fully functional, working .36-caliber black powder revolver—a detailed recreation of the classic Colt Model 1851 Navy. The blued, 7 1/2” octagonal barrel is beautifully complemented by hand-polished walnut grips. Craftsmen commissioned specifically by America Remembers decorate each revolver in lustrous 24-karat gold and nickel, with stunning artwork on the cylinder.
The left side of the barrel identifies the revolver as “The Union Forever Tribute” with a scrolling nickel banner. Both sides of this remarkable firearm are ornately decorated with scrolling vines rendered in 24-karat gold. On the left side of the frame, just above the trigger guard, you’ll find the iconic American bald eagle with wings and talons spread. Beside it you’ll find an illustration of a Union cavalryman and his mount. Courageous cavalrymen like Phillip Sheridan led his men on daring long-range raids and relentlessly pursued Lee’s forces through the Valley Campaigns of 1864.
The right side of the barrel showcases the iconic American bald eagle with wings and talons spread. On the same side of the frame you’ll also find the “US” insignia that identified a Union soldier. Beside it, a Union artillery man poses with his 12-pounder Napoleon Model 1857 cannon. The Napoleon cannon was one of the North’s most feared weapons and was used to devastating effect during major operations including the Battle of Gettysburg.
